Our Story

112 Years of Baking Baltimore's Bread

A Century of Craft

The story of Maranto Bakery begins with two Sicilian families from Cefalu and a handoff that changed Baltimore's bread forever. A tale of immigrant ambition, family dedication, and a commitment to craft that has endured for more than a century.

For 112 years, our bakery has been a neighborhood anchor. A place where the scent of fresh bread greets you before you even reach the door. We have watched Baltimore grow and change, and through it all, we have kept baking. The same recipes. The same hearth ovens. The same family. That is our story, and it is far from over.

Our Journey

From a small family bakery to Baltimore's most trusted bread supplier, one milestone at a time.

1914

From Trinacria to Pearl Street

On nearby Paca Street, the Fava brothers from Cefalu, Sicily ran Trinacria, a bakery and grocery. As their pasta business grew, they handed the bread-making to fellow Sicilians Frank and Sam Maranto. The brothers set up coal-fired brick ovens in a row home on Pearl Street and began baking Italian Vienna Bread, delivering door to door from wicker baskets.

What We Stand For

The values that have guided us for over a century.

Family First

Four-plus generations of the Maranto family have guided this bakery with the same values: hard work, integrity, and love for the craft. Every loaf carries that legacy.

Quality Always

We have never taken shortcuts. Our hearth-baked and pan-baked breads use time-honored recipes and methods because great bread demands patience and care.

Baltimore Proud

This city raised us, and we are proud to feed it. From corner delis to fine restaurants, we are woven into the fabric of Baltimore's food culture.

We're not just baking bread. We're carrying forward a 112-year tradition, loaf by loaf, generation by generation. Thank you, Baltimore.
