Our Story

112 Years of Baking Baltimore's Bread

What is the oldest bakery in Baltimore?

Maranto Bakery is the oldest continuously operating bakery in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1914 by an Italian immigrant family and family owned for 4 generations, it has grown from a neighborhood bakery into one of Baltimore's most trusted wholesale bread suppliers — hearth-baking Italian bread, sub rolls, and kaiser rolls for more than 350 restaurants across six Maryland counties.

A Century of Craft

The story of Maranto Bakery begins with two Sicilian families from Cefalu and a handoff that changed Baltimore's bread forever. A tale of immigrant ambition, family dedication, and a commitment to craft that has endured for more than a century.

For 112 years, our bakery has been a neighborhood anchor. A place where the scent of fresh bread greets you before you even reach the door. We have watched Baltimore grow and change, and through it all, we have kept baking. The same recipes. The same hearth ovens. The same family. That is our story, and it is far from over.

Our Journey

From a small family bakery to Baltimore's most trusted bread supplier, one milestone at a time.

1914

From Trinacria to Pearl Street

On nearby Paca Street, the Fava brothers from Cefalu, Sicily ran Trinacria, a bakery and grocery. As their pasta business grew, they handed the bread-making to fellow Sicilians Frank and Sam Maranto. The brothers set up coal-fired brick ovens in a row home on Pearl Street and began baking Italian Vienna Bread, delivering door to door from wicker baskets.

Feeding a Growing City

In the early decades the bakery turned out loaves as big and round as truck wheels, along with dozens of Sicilian specialty breads. By the late 1930s, F&S Maranto delivery vans were carrying them to families, corner stores, and restaurants across Baltimore.

Through War and Resilience

The bakery came through the Depression and World War II still baking. “We’ve survived wars and depressions,” as the family would later put it. Through rationing and hardship, Maranto kept feeding the neighborhood.

The Delivery Fleet Grows

Maranto Bakery expands delivery across Baltimore, bringing hearth-baked bread to restaurants, delis, and sub shops throughout the city. The delivery trucks become a familiar sight on Baltimore streets.

A Baltimore Institution

Baltimore once had hundreds of small, independent bakeries. One by one they closed. Maranto kept baking, with the same recipes and the same commitment, for a city that had made its bread its own.

Growing While Staying True

Maranto grows to serve more than 350 restaurants, sub shops, grocery stores, and institutions across the Baltimore area. The ovens run all night so the trucks can roll out at 4 a.m. with the freshest Italian bread in the city.

A Century on Pearl Street

Maranto Bakery turns 100, still baking at 244 Pearl Street behind Lexington Market, the same address where Frank and Sam Maranto started. By then it is the last family business left on its block.

What We Stand For

The values that have guided us for over a century.

Family First

Four-plus generations of the Maranto family have guided this bakery with the same values: hard work, integrity, and love for the craft. Every loaf carries that legacy.

Quality Always

We have never taken shortcuts. Our hearth-baked and pan-baked breads use time-honored recipes and methods because great bread demands patience and care.

Baltimore Proud

This city raised us, and we are proud to feed it. From corner delis to fine restaurants, we are woven into the fabric of Baltimore's food culture.

We're not just baking bread. We're carrying forward a 112-year tradition, loaf by loaf, generation by generation. Thank you, Baltimore.
